Even before I ever attempted to raise funds via Kickstarter to help make a thorium documentary (optimistically called "Thorium Remix 2012") I was wondering how to crowdsource funding the reactor itself. A very expensive proposition.

But I never considered the amount of money needed to be the primary obstacle. Kickstarter is constantly breaking records in project size... currently the largest project funded was $10 Million USD for "Pebble".

The challenge is what reward can be offered. Aside from altruism, what can a backer of a MSR related Kickstarter project receive that non-backers also receive? Everyone gets a better world, whether they pitch in or not.

Equity is not possible... the USA is revising investment regulations to allow crowdfunding involving equity but as of right-now (and probably for quite a while) it is illegal.

I recently considered a reward related to medical isotopes... maybe first-dibs on dispersed cancer treatment with targeted alpha emitters? Such treatment is likely a long way off... regardless, Kickstarter does not allow health related rewards. Medicine or medical treatments are out.

So my latest notion (and I've been pondering this since 2011) is... how about a tour of an MSR before it is operational? Or at least a tour of something physical that has been constructed to further research on MSR? Something more complex than just a salt loop (like ORNL may have by now).... and something safer than an operating reactor.

Because I'm a video guy, my own incentives are different from guys in companies actually wanting to build MSRs...

First off, no one in a private company wants to be seen running a crowdfunding campaign. If it succeeds then it looks like charity and that they can't attract private investment. If they can't even reach their fundraising goal, then all of that plus the stink of failure.

No MSR venture wants to share any more information than is necessary with the public. Thorium advocates milling around their gear on a tour would not be appealing.

What I can do, or more accurately, anyone outside of an MSR venture can do, is both risk looking like a charity and take the risk of failing. So far, between my own "Th" and Frankie's "The Good Reactor" there's been 4 successful MSR video fundraising cycles. Maybe we need to think bigger.

Right now, I'm fine with where my doc is headed. As far as explaining MSR, it is gonna happen. This is me thinking about a future project.

If you watch "Revenge of the Electric Car" there's a lot more on-screen, and I think that has to do with tangible work results... I've never seen an MSR venture with an operating salt loop, never-mind a reactor core waiting to be fueled.

If enough money was raised, then maybe that could fund one or more ventures enough to build something to videotape. In a sense, this is the tail wagging the dog. But I think maybe the tail does need to wag the dog.

This would be like an "X Prize". To gain access to kickstarted capital a venture would need to grant access to their work for the purpose of the doc, and grant backers a tour of the equipment. In fact, part of the incentive to backers is they'd be videotaped touring the site... that works for the doc (look at all the people backing this thing) and it works for the backers (look I'm one of the guys who helped make this happen).

I'm posting this notion to Thorium Forum to try spitball this... I've been scratching my head for years wondering what rewards could possibly line up with MSR development.

This might not be the best possible mechanism, but I think a viable crouwdfunding approach is out there and it just hasn't been figured out yet. Decoupling the crowdfunding from the MSR ventures might be part of the solution.
